The United Kingdom is the latest country to respond to the potential for a Mexican swine flu pandemic. While no cases of swine flu symptoms have yet been confirmed in the United Kingdom the government is already trying to calm the public. The swine flu outbreak has hit yet another country. Are we heading for a swine flu pandemic? This time it is New Zealand which is reporting cases of citizens showing swine flu symptoms. A number of crew members on Air New Zealand flight NZ1 from Mexico have reported experiencing the symptoms of swine flu. The New Zealand government has so far been able to contact two thirds of the passengers on flight NZ1.
The Air New Zealand flight was carrying a number of students from Auckland’s Rangitoto College and those students are also showing swine flu symptoms. This clip from 3 News in New Zealand explores cases of swine flu symptoms that are popping up around the country and gives advice from the government on what to do if you feel you may have come in contact with anybody who is showing swine flue symptoms.
With the potential for a swine flu pandemic, countries around the globe are making statements on how they plan to deal with any potential swine flu outbreaks in their own countries. Russia is the latest country to speak out and say what they plan to do. This report from Russia Today features the chief medical officer of the country who explains why this current swine flu is more of a concern than previous flu warnings. He also says that Russia is asking citizens to refrain from traveling to Mexico until more is known about the swine flu outbreak.
At first is sounded like swine flu was just in Mexico but fears of a swine flu pandemic are growing as more possible cases of swine flu are being reported around the world. Canada has now confirmed that they have at least six cases. Four of the Canadian swine flu cases are located in Nova Scotia and the other two in British Columbia. Reportedly, all of these swine flu cases are connected directly to the swine flu that has killed 103 people in Mexico. However, at this point all of the cases reported in Canada have been similar to the US cases in that they are apparently a more mild form of swine flu. Why it is killing people in Mexico and not outside is as yet undetermined.
Everybody is talking about the swine flu outbreak that is sweeping Mexico. Yet, most of us don’t know the swine flu symptoms. That is only natural because most of us hadn’t even heard of the condition until a couple days ago and now it is near enough the only thing making news. Air travel is making the swine flu outbreak a global story because there are people showing up around the world with swine flu symptoms.
So, what symptoms should we look for when trying to determine if we may be having Mexican swine flu symptoms? This swine flu segment on CBS’s Early Show features a couple from Texas that have shown swine flu symptoms. They conduct the entire interview wearing swine flu masks to that they didn’t pass the flu onto the camera crew. During the interview with Harry Smith they share their experience with swine flu symptoms.
The segment then continues with a doctor taking a more clinical approach and discussing the symptoms of swine flu. She talks about when we need to be worried and check in with a doctor. The doctor also tries to calm any swine flue panic by stressing most cases of swine flu outside of Mexico have been mild.
